Today, he announced that the County has taken a major step toward achieving that goal. The Board of Supervisors joined Shirakawa in unanimously voting to authorize the County to purchase the former San Jose Medical Center property. The 13-acre site will provide enough space for a Downtown San Jose Clinic, parking, and future development opportunities. In November 2008, voters passed Measure A which includes $50 million of one-time funds to build a new or renovate an existing facility to provide health care services in the downtown area. “This is a great opportunity for the downtown community,” said Supervisor Shirakawa, who represents Downtown San Jose on the Board of Supervisors. “Not only will this acquisition bring much needed medical facilities for downtown residents; the additional space will provide economic development opportunities for the County.” The former San Jose Medical Center site is in the center of the neighborhoods to be served by a new clinic and provides access to major bus routes. The site also includes adequate parking space and an existing 30,000 square foot medical building that can be remodeled to meet the needs of the neighborhood.
