San Jose Medfly Infestation in Santa Clara County Eradicated!

The California Department of Food and Agriculture found seven Mediterranean Fruit Flies in October 2007.  These finds resulted in an emergency proclamation by the California Secretary of Agriculture authorizing implementation of an eradication project.

We are pleased to report that on August 4, 2008 the State declared our Medfly infestation was eradicated!   Thank you to all the residents, agricultural businesses, and farmers’ markets in the quarantined area for cooperating with the quarantine restrictions.  Your efforts helped make eradication possible!

It is extremely important to not bring any fruits or vegetables home from your travels, unless they have been properly treated or cleared by an authorized agricultural official.  Exotic fruit flies impact not only our multi-billion dollar agricultural industry, but threaten California’s native and urban environments.
