1. Determine if you are eligible to e-file. Most businesses are eligible. To determine if you are eligible to e-file, go to the last page of the property statement. At the top of the page will be your Business’ name, BIN Number, Account No and the year. If a BIN number is not displayed, you are NOT eligible. Click here to see a sample form. Below are examples of business that cannot use e-filing:
-
My equipment is out on lease or “Rent to Others”
-
Multi-Family/Apartments
-
I use Alternate Schedule A (For reporting fixtures belonging to banks & financial institutions)
-
My filing requires additional documentation not normally required by the Assessor
-
I moved out of Santa Clara County before January 1st
2. Identify your business Entity Number, Location Number, and your BIN Number from the Property Statement mailed by the Assessor’s Office on January 1. This information is located on the last page of the 571L. At the top of the page will be your Business’ name, BIN Number, Account No and the year. The BIN Number is labeled BIN Number. However, the 11 digit number described as Account No: must be split into 3 parts for purposes of e-filing. The first 6 digits are the Entity Number; the next four digits are the Location Number and the last digit is for internal purposes only. Click here to see a sample form
You can also use our new lookup application, designed for businesses, to determine if you are eligible to E-file. Simply go to www.sccgov.org/efile.

VERY IMPORTANT
Minimum Site Requirements for e-filing
Internet Explorer V 5.1 or higher.
Adobe Acrobat Reader V 5.0 or higher.
If your system does not meet the minimum software requirements, you can download the latest version using the Internet for FREE!
For Adobe Acrobat Reader, the URL is www.adobe.com and click on ‘Get Adobe Reader.’ From here, you should follow their instructions on how to download. Note: you will need to know your computer platform (i.e. Window 98) and remember to save the download version. Also to begin e-filing, you will need to ‘restart’ your computer.
For the latest version of Internet Explorer, go to www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/default.asp and follow their instructions on how to download or order the CD. Again, be sure to remember to save the download version and restart your computer.
Other Important Information
* MAC hardware. The application has been tested and will work on OS X machines. In the last step, select the “View and Print Form 571-L” box and the application will download a file titled “generatePDF.asp”. Depending on the last associated application for the “.asp” extension, your computer may start a different application which should be closed. Rename the file “generatePDF.asp” to “my571file.pdf”. You MUST open this file using Acrobat Reader. Using the default Apple Viewer, which can open pdf files, it will present only the background form without completed data.
* Time outs. The E-filing system will "time out" after 10-15 minutes depending on your Internet Service Provider. To prevent time outs, and loss of data entered, save your work often.
* BIN Number and Access Code are terms that can be used interchangeably in the instructions. The distinction is only due to when this number is used, either as initial access security or later to "sign" your filing. Make sure you keep this number confidential while entering your data.
* "Cookies" must be enabled to use e-filing. Consult your Web Browser Help selection Index.
