Legal Mandates

The County Counsel is the attorney for the County, including the Board of Supervisors and all County officers. Also, upon request, this Office is the attorney for the Grand Jury, the Superior Court, and all special districts whose governing boards are composed in whole or in part of members of the County Board of Supervisors.

In addition, the County, through this Office, has the discretion to provide legal services to various other local public entities, and to charge a fee for the services. County Charter Secs. 301, 701; County Ordinance Code Secs. A22-11, et. seq.; Government Code Secs. 26529, 27640, et seq.

The need for legal services is controlled by the specific and changing needs of each local public agency and by the dynamic regulatory, legislative, and judicial environments.
