Jill Boone, Manager
The Climate Change and Sustainability Program was formed in July 2008. The initial focus is on reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the County's facilities and operations and the community. There are many sources of greenhouse gas emissions, with the largest being: buildings and facilities, transportation, waste disposal, and consumption. Water use is also a big factor as it represents 19% of all electricity and 30% of all natural gas (not including natural gas used to generate electricity) usage in the state of California. Climate Action Plans addressing these sources and identifying potential reductions will be completed in 2009.
Sustainability requires looking at the interrelatedness of many factors - environment, economy, social equity - in addressing how we make decisions and set priorities. Sustainability is often defined as: Meeting the needs of today without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs.
