Supervisor Ken Yeager


Ken Yeager currently serves as a member of the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors, representing the 4th District, which includes the cities of Campbell and Santa Clara, as well as west San Jose and the Burbank and Cambrian neighborhoods. He was elected in June 2006. Supervisor Yeager previously served six years on the San Jose City Council, first elected in November 2000 and re-elected to a second term in March 2004. Prior to that, Ken served two terms as a Trustee of the San Jose Evergreen Community College District, from 1992-2000.

As Supervisor, Ken is committed to maintaining the County’s safety net of quality health care and social services. During the County’s most recent budget process, Ken worked with departments and fellow supervisors to save many public health, mental health and rehabilitation services that would have otherwise been significantly reduced or cut completely.

Ken has continued his history of working to preserve and expand trails, including the Los Gatos Creek and Coyote Creek trails, which have seen increased maintenance since Ken took his position on the Board of Supervisors. Ken sits on the boards of Caltrain and the Valley Transportation Authority as the County’s representative to the Metropolitan Transportation Commission. In these roles, Ken works to fund and expand transportation projects in Santa Clara County.

Ken earned a B.A. in political science from San Jose State University (SJSU) and an M.A. in sociology and a Ph.D. in education from Stanford University. Prior to his public service career, he taught full time in the Political Science Department at SJSU for 12 years.
Ken has completed the Senior Executives in State and Local Government Program at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, as well as the Ethics in Public Service Program sponsored by the Josephson Institute of Ethics. In 2004, Ken was appointed to chair the San Jose City Council’s Blue Ribbon Task Force on Ethics, which reviewed the City’s ethics and lobbying ordinances.

Ken continues to teach one course at San Jose State University, utilizing community involvement and public service experience in the process. He is an avid runner, having completed over 30 marathons and numerous triathlons. He often runs on trails in San Jose. Ken is the first openly gay elected official in Santa Clara County.
