Santa Clara County's Juvenile Drug Treatment Court, founded in 1996, was one of the first in the country. Since that time there has been a growing recognition of the effectiveness of Drug Treatment Courts and there has been a surge in the number of Juvenile Drug Treatment Courts throughout the county. Drug Treatment Courts aim to provide treatment to individuals, whose substance use underlies their involvement with the criminal justice system. Participants enter treatment rather that face more severe sanctions. Drug Treatment Courts have been shown to help prevent participants from penetrating deeper into the criminal justice system at a greater cost to society and the taxpayer.
