Medication-Assisted Treatment for Opioid Addiction.  Despite all the research-based evidence from the last forty years about the effectiveness of methadone treatment for opioid addiction, some of the social stigma about the medication and its effects on the human body has remained.   This presentation will review several common misunderstandings about methadone treatment and present the research evidence about the effectiveness and safety of this medication.   Some information about buprenorphine (Suboxone, Subutex) will also be presented.

Drugs, Brain & Behavior:  The Science of Addiction.   Alcohol and other drug use begins with an individual’s conscious choice, but addiction is not simply " a lot of alcohol and other drug use." Based on advances in neuroscience, the evidence is that drug addiction is a chronic, and for many people, reoccurring disease characterized by compulsive drug seeking and use that results from prolonged effects of drugs on the brain.  This presentation reviews the new science of addiction and the implications for treatment.
