The Santa Clara County Department of Correction is the fifth largest jail system in California, and among the 20 largest systems in the United States.  Our jail is among the 100 systems nationwide with an inmate population of more than 1,000.  In 2008, our county houses and cares for an average of 4,632 inmates a day, a custody population higher than in 10 state systems.  We serve nearly five million meals each year while providing medical and mental health care for an inmate population that rarely has any contact with the health care system.

The Santa Clara County Department of Correction books approximately 65,000 arrestees annually.  The average length of stay is about 110 days, and 80 percent of the population has a history of drug or alcohol related problems.
