INTRODUCTION

The Domestic Violence Council (DVC) was created by the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors in 1991 and serves as an advisory body to the Board members.

The Council membership consists of twenty-four (24) members composed of the following: three (3) representatives from battered women’s shelters; one (1) representative from each of the following activity areas: Police Chiefs Association, San Jose Police Department, Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office, Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office, batterer’s treatment programs, pretrial release services, the bar association, family law bar, the Public Defender’s Office, children’s issues, faith community, immigrant voices, Social Service Agency, victim-witness, probation, the gay and lesbian community, the medical community, a DV survivor, one public at large member; and two (2) representatives from the Superior Court.  Representatives should be at a policy-making level of their respective organization. All meetings of the Council are open to the public. A majority vote of the entire membership is required to take any action. By July 1, 2010, the family law bar and remaining public at large seat will be eliminated and the Council will consist of 22 members.
