Since 1924, when Stevens Creek County Park was established, people have given their time and talents to help make Santa Clara County Parks special places to visit. In 2006, nearly 2,260 volunteers donated almost 30,000 hours of service to a variety of projects and programs. Become a County Parks Volunteer and see how you can play an important role in providing visitor services, and in protecting and enhancing parklands. | ONGOING VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES: | | Please email or call (408) 355-2254 if you are interested in one of the ongoing volunteer opportunities listed below | | Adopt-a-Trail - Do you have a trail you use that you would like to help maintain? Do you have a group that is looking for some good, physical service work in a beautiful outdoor setting? If so, we’d like you to adopt–a-trail. Adopt-a-Trail volunteers, after completing Department training, will take care of a trail, or section of trail, within a County Park. Adopt-a-Trail volunteers conduct trail brushing/pruning, litter/debris removal, routine trail tread/drainage clearing, and major trail problem reporting. Participants who agree to participate for one-year will receive in-park signage acknowledging their commitment. | | Camp Hosts - County Parks has an on-going need for Camp Host volunteers. Hosts receive a full-utility campsite in exchange for 20-hours per week of volunteer service. Duties may include site security, camp/restroom maintenance, and assisting park staff with educational programs. Currently, all park host sites are occupied, but applications are being taken for future openings. Per State law, fingerprinting for this position may be required. | | Docents - Docents are needed an on-going basis to assist park staff in conducting educational programs and staffing visitor facilities, especially during the weekday school programs during the spring and fall seasons. Candidates must be comfortable working with children and groups. Fingerprinting for this position, per State law, may be required. All volunteers receive training, a uniform and a nametag. Docents are needed at the following locations: Chitactac-Adams, New Almaden Quicksilver Mining Museum, Santa Teresa Historic Area, Stevens Creek Visitor Center, & Sanborn Visitor Center. | | Park Friends Groups - Park Friends help with various projects at their designated park throughout the year. Park Friends groups are currently operating at Almaden-Quicksilver, Chitactac-Adams, Joseph D. Grant, Motorcycle, Penitencia Creek, and Santa Teresa parks. If you would like to be a part of one of these groups, or would like to start your own “Friends” group at another County Park, give us a call. | | Trail Crew Lead Volunteers - We’re looking for some good people who would like to be highly skilled trail “hot-shot” group members. Trail Crew Leads will be provided with in-depth trail-building and maintenance training, and will then assist park staff with major trail projects. Trail Crew Leads will also oversee adopt-a-trail groups and Trail Day events for scheduled trail projects. Per State law, fingerprinting for this position may be required. | | Trail Watch - County Parks is looking for hikers, bikers and horseback riders who use, or would like to use, park trails and want to help Ranger staff by patrolling, providing visitor information, providing basic services in emergencies, and correcting or reporting park violations. All candidates must complete a 16-hour training academy, and a training hike/ride prior to being activated. Volunteers are asked to provide a minimum of 48-hours of service annually once active. Uniforms are provided to all volunteers. The next Trail Watch Academy is scheduled for Spring 2005- sign up early- these Academies fill up quickly! | | Individualized Volunteer Projects - Perfect for scout troops or Eagle Scouts, corporate volunteers, school groups, individuals, or any other group looking to help out! If our ongoing programs or annual events don't fit your schedule or aren't exactly what you are looking for, we can still find something for you!
