/images/258950DiscGolfHellyer.gif) Nestled in the oak-studded grassland east of Hellyer County Park lies a unique sport, Disc Golf. You think disc golf -what is it? Well, disc golf is played much like traditional golf. Instead of a ball and clubs, players use a flying disc or Frisbee. Like traditional golf, the object of the game is to complete a hole in the fewest number of throws. The player starts out by throwing from a tee location to the hole, which is most commonly a metal pole with chains attached to slow the throw and a metal basked to catch the disc. Trees, shrubs and natural terrain variations provide challenges and frustrations common to traditional golf. Although not a common sport in California, there are over 900 courses in the United States and a professional disc golf association. Santa Clara County Parks and the Silicon Valley Disc Golf Club are hosts to the only disc golf course in Santa Clara County. This 30-acre site includes tees, fairways, approaches and chain basket "holes" that challenge even the most experienced disc thrower. Because disc golf does not require a significant amount of time to learn, almost everyone can enjoy this sport with friends or individually. /images/258947DiscGolfHellyer1.gif) The course is open daily from 8 a.m. to sunset and there is no fee to play. There is a $5.00 vehicle entry fee to enter the park. From Highway 101 in south San Jose, takethe Hellyer Avenue exit, go west onto Hellyer Avenue and turn left into the park. Head for the east side of Cottonwood Lake and you are there! For more information regarding disc golf or the Silicon Valley Disc Golf Club, call (408)371-9984 ext. 17. |
