There is still a limited supply of H1N1 flu vaccine in Santa Clara County. But, more supplies of vaccine are beginning to flow into the county on a more regular basis. We will continue to run clinics for people who are at higher risk for getting or having complications from the H1N1 flu, or who care for populations at high risk for severe flu. Over the next weeks and months, as regular shipments of vaccine arrive, there will be enough vaccine for anyone who wants it.
Public and private healthcare providers in Santa Clara County have received 147,000 doses of the H1N1 influenza vaccine to date. This amount does not include the Kaiser system, which has received its own supply of the vaccine.
People who are high risk for illness or complications from this flu should first contact their provider to see if they have the vaccine.
Most of the vaccine supplied to Santa Clara County has gone to private healthcare providers. To be eligible to receive the vaccine, medical providers were required to sign up with the California Department of Public Health. Providers in Santa Clara County who are receiving the H1N1 vaccine include local hospitals, clinics, private medical groups and practices. All providers have been instructed to follow the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines to provide the vaccine to those in one of the risk groups for the time being.
The H1N1 vaccine will provide the best protection from the H1N1 flu. Public vaccination clinics are for those at high risk and those who care for high risk individuals, and those groups are:
- Pregnant women;
- People who live with or provide care for infants under six months;
- Children and young adults between the ages of 6 months and 24 years;
- Adults between the ages of 25 and 64 years who have medical conditions that put them at higher risk for flu-related complications; and,
- Healthcare and emergency medical services workers.
Because the vaccine supply continues to be limited, it is important that persons not belonging to one of the five groups above wait to be vaccinated so that those at highest risk of severe illness can get the vaccine.
Once the demand for vaccine for people at highest risk has been met, the Public Health Department will instruct local providers to begin providing the vaccine to all others who want it. We thank you for your patience and understanding.
Clinic locations, days, and hours may change based on the vaccine’s availability and public demand. Please check www.sccphd.org/h1n1vaccine for weekly updates to clinic schedules.
If you have a fever and are feeling sick, please do not go to a public vaccination clinic. If you are at high risk for flu complications, you should contact your medical provider or seek medical attention. People who are sick will not be given the H1N1 vaccine.
