Do you know when the next big disaster will strike the Bay Area? According to the U. S. Geological Survey, recorded large-scale earthquakes happen on average every 140 years. If history is a reliable predictor, we are due for an earthquake of 6.7 on the Richter scale, or greater, any time now.
During any large-scale disaster, whether it’s an earthquake, wildfire, flood or terrorist attack, the County of Santa Clara becomes the coordinator of emergency response. We provide resources, identify the need for mutual aid in support of local cities, and coordinate with state and federal authorities. Our primary goal in a disaster is to save lives.
The County is ensuring that its employees and other public employees know what it means to be Disaster Service Workers so that they can assist in disaster response and recovery activities, including: mass evacuations; coordination of shelter locations; reducing property loss and damage to the community; and working to get affected business, community, and government services back online and functioning.
Although we don’t know when the next big disaster will strike, we do know that the community’s ability to respond and recover from these disasters may largely depend on how well prepared local governments, neighborhoods, and residents are in advance.
We encourage public employees, residents and businesses to take steps now and during Earthquake Preparedness Month to prepare. Prepare now before a disaster strikes.
