2. How can I prepare for the EMT National Registry Examination?
The EMT National Registry Examination is based on the Department of Transportation EMT-Basic curricula. Be sure to ask your instructor if your program utilizes the most recent revision. A copy is available online at www.nhtsa.dot.gov/people/injury/ems/nsc.htm
The National Registry also has a practice exam available for purchase at www.nremt.org
You can pick one up a Livescan application at the County's EMS office (645 S.Bascom Ave in San Jose), or call (408) 885-4250 and request that one be mailed to you.
4. Where can I take the EMT National Registry Examination?
The EMS Agency offers the EMT National Registry examination once per month. Be sure to schedule your examination early. Click here for the calendar of events.
5. Where do I complete my background check (LiveScan) for EMS employment?
Your training program and the EMS Agency have the required forms and location of sites in Santa Clara County. Certification requests can not be processed until the EMS Agency has received your record from the Department of Justice.
It is in your best interest to complete the LiveScan process as soon as possible. You are NOT required to have completed the EMT program to start the LiveScan process.
7. Do I have to maintain EMT National Registry certification?
No. It is your responsibility to know and meet the recertification requirements of the EMT National Registry if you plan to maintain National Registry certification.
You have to recertify as an EMT every two years you must have 24 hours of approved continuing education. Every four years, you must take a written and practical examination.
11. What is on the EMT National Registry Examination?
The EMT National Registry exam is based on the presentation of scenarios and expected treatments. 150 multiple-choice questions include: Airway management, cardiology, trauma, medical, obstetrics, pediatrics, and EMS operations. A score of at least 70% is required to pass.
In the State of California, certification of Emergency Medical Technicians is the responsibility of the local emergency medical services agency and is valid statewide.
