Santa Clara Valley Medical Center provides quality care and excellent services. One of the main reasons - the excellent medical staff that provides care and treatment to the patients we serve. Numerous awards, accreditations and grants have been awarded to a number of our employees, as well as to various units and medical center departments for outstanding care.

Accreditations

  • Santa Clara Valley Medical Center accredited by The Joint Commission (2007).
  • Stroke Center accredited by The Joint Commission (2007).
  • Trauma Center & Pediatric Trauma Center accredited by the American College of Surgeons (2007).
  • Pharmacy Residency Program accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (2007).
  • Rehabilitation Center accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (2006).
  • A number of Medical Residency Programs have been accredited by the Accreditation Committee for Graduate Medical Education, which is a national committee that governs all residency programs. These programs are Radiology (2008), Obstetric/Gynecology (2007), Internal Medicine (2005), and Transitional Program (2005).

Awards

  • Pediatric Healthy Lifestyles Center awarded Honorable Mention by the National Association of Public Hospitals and Health Systems (2008).
  • Pediatric Healthy Lifestyles Center awarded Top Honors by the California Association of Public Hospitals as a Quality Leader for Improvements in Chronic Disease Management (2007).
  • Valley Homeless Healthcare Program at Puentes Clinic received the Reducing Health Care Disparities Award from the National Association of Public Hospitals (2007).
  • Center for Diabetes and Metabolism was awarded the American Diabetes Association Education Recognition Certificate for its high quality diabetes self-management education programs (2007).
  • Valley Homeless Health Program received the PRC Patient Satisfaction Award from the Emergency Housing Consortium (2007).
  • Partners in AIDS Care and Education (PACE) Clinic received the AIDS Coalition of Silicon Valley’s Award of Distinction (2007).
  • Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine accredited by The Joint Commission and the AABB – the American Association of Blood Banks (2007 and 2006).
  • SCVHHS received the George W. Bush Award from the US Air Force Association for outstanding employer support of Air National Guard Officer, Dr. Dean Winslow (2006).

Physician & Staff Recognition

  • Tamara Bushnik, MD, received the Distinguished Member award from the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine (2008).
  • William Jensen, MD, received the David Burgess Award for Lifetime Contributions to HIV/AIDS Service from the Institute for Health Care Improvement (2008).
  • Akshat Shah, MD, received the Jose Montero Teaching Award from the Stanford Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Residency Program (2008).
  • Rhonda Williams, MD, received the James Thompson Humanitarian Award from the Stanford Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Residency Program (2008).
  • The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine was recognized by the California Clinical Laboratory Technical Advisory Board for its affiliation San Jose State University to develop and maintain the largest Clinical Laboratory Scientist Internship Program in California. The department was also recognized for its affiliation with De Anza College to develop the only Medical Laboratory Technician Internship Program in California. The SCVMC Laboratory is the first one in the state to employ Medical Laboratory Technicians (2008).
  • Thomas Bush, MD, and Frank Kagawa, MD, named Regional Physician Champions by the Bay Area Patient Safety Collaborative. They received this honor for their exceptional leadership in implementing strategies to improve patient safety and quality of care (2007).
  • Neha Chandra, MD, received an award from the American College of Physicians for most outstanding clinical research presentation (2007).
  • Jill Sproul, Nurse Manager of the Burn Center, received the Alan & Delwyn Breslau Award from the Phoenix Society. The Phoenix Society awarded its highest honor to a member who has a collaborative spirit and enhances the ability of the Society to fulfill its mission of peer support, education and advocacy (2007).
  • David Stevens, MD, received the Lucille George Medal from the International Society for Human and Animal Mycology. It is the highest award given in this field for lifetime achievement. Dr. Stevens also received the Charles E. Smith Memorial Award from the Coccidiodomycosis Study Group (2006).
  • Clifford Wang, MD, received the Community Service Award from the Public Health Institute and MedPin for outstanding collaboration and generous sharing of pharmacy expertise with clinicians serving vulnerable populations in California (2006).

  • Cardinal Health Patient Safety Grant for Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Smart Start Protocol and Anticoagulation Inpatient/Outpatient Bridge (2008).
  • Traumatic Brain Injury Model System Grant from the US Department of Education, Office of Special Education and Rehabilitation Services, and National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (2007).
  • The Moore Foundation’s Betty Irene Moore Grant for Nursing Initiative (2006).
  • Ryan White Care Act Grant for Ambulatory Care, Treatment Adherence, Early Intervention Services and Mental Health (1996-present).
  • Early Intervention Program Grants for Primary Care, Bridge Program, and Positive Changes (2007-2008).
