May 2009 - As a member of this community, we want to update you regularly with news and information about seismic (earthquake) safety and other improvements underway at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center (SCVMC).
With two major environmental projects, SCVMC is working to make the medical center campus more sustainable and energy efficient, while saving resources and money. The first project is the activation of a newly installed solar power system. The solar panel system, which is expected to generate approximately 10% of the medical center's energy needs. This solar power project is a good example of the County of Santa Clara’s expanding efforts to combine environmental stewardship with greater efficiency. Click on the Going Green link to learn more.
The second environmental project is SCVMC’s Green Building Project. The new hospital bed building is being designed and built to achieve Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) gold certification. The LEED program is the most extensive and well-recognized standard that distinguishes green buildings from other buildings. While the LEED program doesn’t have a standard for inpatient hospital buildings, SCVMC is hoping to be the first in the nation to obtain LEED gold certification. This will set a national standard for public hospitals, and provide a model for other public and private sector hospitals. You can learn more about this project on our Going Green link as well.
Together, these projects demonstrate Santa Clara Valley Health & Hospital System’s commitment to putting its investments not only into leadership and service in healthcare, but also into stewardship of the environment through energy conservation and sustainable design.
