The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center (SCVMC) is committed to providing compassionate and cutting-edge care for premature and other babies who need urgent medical attention immediately after birth.
| Our caring physicians, nurses and other healthcare staff are available around the clock to monitor the treatment and progress of our neonatal patients. Our goal is to send healthy babies home to their families. As a 40-bed, Level III (the highest ranking possible) unit, we are capable and equipped to take care of babies with the most severe and complex medical conditions. | /images/74241NeonateNurses1.jpg) |
This is due in a large part to our highly trained physicians, nursing staff and large network of subspecialists. Whether your child is born prematurely, suffers from a medical condition, or has a birth defect, the experts at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center are ready to provide the very best possible care 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
The NICU is located on the third floor of the main hospital building. The NICU is one of only 23 units in California designated a Regional Level III facility. This is the highest designation given by California Children’s Services (CCS). With almost 6,000 babies born here last year, and nearly 700 NICU admissions, Santa Clara Valley Medical Center is the largest birthing hospital in our County.
We are also a teaching and research institution that not only educates new physicians and nurses, but also contributes to the investigation of new therapies for the babies we care for. Our physicians and staff are trained to provide the most up-to-date treatment options for our patients, and because of our work, we help to expand the knowledge of neonatologists everywhere.
Our staff here at the NICU understands the importance of family. We are dedicated to making parents as much a part of their baby’s care as every other member of the healthcare team. SCVMC was just selected among other medical institutions in the area to be the Northern California site for the March of Dimes Family Support Program. We are building the family support program to help parents and relatives better care for their babies by improving communication and providing resources needed during this critical period of time in the care of our most fragile patients.
