Parent instruction and education can begin as soon as your baby is born. When a baby's medical condition permits, parents can hold, feed, bathe, diaper and provide other care to their newborn child. NICU staff members are happy to instruct parents on appropriate care techniques and answer any questions or concerns.

The NICU staff also provides detailed instruction to parents about caring for their baby at home. These instructions include lessons on proper breastfeeding and breast-pumping techniques, how to take the baby's temperature, and proper positioning of the baby during and after feeding. In addition, the staff teaches parents about umbilical cord care, circumcision care, formula preparation, safety tips, car-seat safety laws, immunization requirements, how to recognize signs of infection, and when to call the doctor.
