What is the physical agility test?
The physical agility test consists of four (4) events that are timed and scored separately. These events include:
1. Solid fence climb
2. 99-Yard obstacle course
3. Lift and drag a 165-pound dummy 32 feet
4. 500 yard run
After all 4 events are completed, the points are added
up. In order to pass you'll need a total of at least 318 points. Scores are based on both how well and how quickly each event is completed.

For what types of reasons would my application for Deputy Sheriff be disqualified?
There are 4 main reasons for disqualification. These include:
1. Lack of full disclosure in your personal background and history .
2. Drug use history.
3. Failure to pass written exam.
4. Failure to pass physical agility exam.

Can I have a second job while actively serving as a Deputy Sheriff?
Yes, but only with express permission from your immediate supervisor and the Sheriff.

Why will I be asked to take a polygraph test?
To verify the information you have provided during the background check.

Will I have to work in jails as a new Deputy Sheriff?
No. The County jails are staffed with Correctional Officers, not Deputies.

How long is the Deputy Sheriff's Academy? Where is it?
The next academy start date is February 24, 2009.
It is approximately 22 weeks long and runs weekdays,
8 am to 5 pm. (with some evening sessions). Our academy is located at the Santa Clara County Justice Training Center:

When will I be able to choose my assignments?
After the completion of one year of patrol.

What types of testing will be required in the application process?
In addition to written and physical agility exams, you will be asked to pass a psychological evaluation, polygraph and medical screening. Also, an extensive background investigation will be conducted analyzing your personal history. The final step in the application process will be an oral interview with a senior member of the Sheriff's staff. Your application may be disqualified at any point in the application process if results are not deemed equivalent with job requirements.

How long is the application process?
Typically, from the date we receive your written job application to the date when you may be available to enter the academy is 3-6 months.
