HELLO FROM DISTRICT 2!
Recently, President Obama proclaimed September "National Preparedness Month." Last week, we were reminded of the importance of being prepared when we watched on television thousands of people who responded to and recovered from the damage done by Hurricane Isaac. While there are no hurricanes in Santa Clara County, other natural disasters such as earthquakes could suddenly come upon us. We need to be prepared.

Each of us has an important role to play in strengthening our preparedness for disasters of all types, from cyber incidents and acts of terrorism to natural disasters. That's why I support emergency management that engages the whole community -- from Federal, State, and local, to the private sector, nonprofits, faith-based organizations, and the general public.

Families can also take action by building a disaster supply kit with food, water, and essential supplies in case of emergency, and by developing and sharing an emergency plan with your loved ones. My family has one. Please take the time to prepare one for your family. I encourage you to visit www.Ready.gov to learn more about the risks facing our communities and find out what you can do to prepare.

Have a great September, and remember to be safe!

Sincerely,

George Shirakawa

In The Know
Warm reading a book about composting

Composting is nature's way of recycling. It is a satisfying way to turn fruit, vegetable and yard trimmings into a dark, crumbly, sweet smelling soil conditioner. Composting is easy, it's smart, and it's recycling

Composting:

  • Saves you money by lowering garbage bills and replacing store-bought soil conditioners.
  • Helps garden and house plants by improving the fertility and health of your soil.
  • Saves water by helping the soil hold moisture and reducing water runoff.
  • Benefits the environment by recycling valuable organic resources and extending the life of our landfills.
