The Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office allows motivated college students and recently graduated college students who are interested in gaining hands-on experience in the criminal justice system and working to help the District Attorney represent the People of Santa Clara. Applicants must be at least 18-years-old. Our office offers a variety of volunteer opportunities for eligible students to learn about the criminal justice system by working closely with prosecutors, investigators, and support staff, as well as court officers and law enforcement representatives. Our college internship program offers unique opportunities for anyone interested in the criminal justice system. College interns may collect and analyze statistics, perform research and special studies on issues affecting individual cases; assemble reports, documents or manuals for distribution; contact witnesses -- civilian and law enforcement -- regarding court dates; assemble case evidence notebooks; sort evidence; review jailhouse tapes; and provide court support.
As an undergraduate student, you will be given critical responsibilities that assist the function of the District Attorney's Office. You will also have the opportunity to observe courtroom proceedings, join the field trips, participate in a police ride-along, and attend the in house training sessions as well as the noon hour Brown Bag Sessions.
The college intern will be required to volunteer a minimum of 15 hours a week during the school year. Summer sessions are full time 40 hour a week commitments.
If a student is interested in the law clerk program, the student needs to submit the following documents:
- Cover letter stating why the student is interested in doing a volunteer internship with our office;
- College Transcripts.
- Complete the Personal History Questionnaire (PHQ) which is a separate attachment at the bottom of this page. This does not need to be witnessed.
- Complete the Livescan form which is a separate attachment at the bottom of this page.
All students will be required to complete a Criminal Record Check Information with the submission of their application packet. These forms are thoroughly reviewed by our Bureau of Investigation, and students are encouraged to be candid. Acceptance into any one of the College Internship Programs is conditioned upon the candidate passing a background check.
Anyone interested in the college intern programs with the District Attorney's Office should send the above documentation by mail, e-mail to LBinder@da.sccgov.org or hand deliver to the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office address is as follows:
