In June 2001, the County of Santa Clara Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Program was awarded a grant from the California Integrated Management Board (CIWMB) implementing public education to promote the immediate disposal of two pesticides Dursban (chlorpyrifos) and Diazinon. The objective of this grant was to provide county residents with a safe and convenient means of disposal, information on health risks involved with it’s use, and pesticide alternatives.
Awareness of the dangers of Dursban and Diazinon has been spread through a wide variety of outreach methods including door hangers, brochures, and appointment letter inserts. Over 176,000 door hangers were distributed in Santa Clara County. There was also outreach material passed out to a number of schools in San Jose and Los Gatos.
It is illegal to sell Dursban as of December 31, 2001, and Diazinon will be completely off the market by the end of 2004. These chemicals have been studied and found to be dangerous nerve toxins. During the span of the grant, 34,278 residents have dropped off pesticide products of which, 9,800 pounds were Dursban and Diazinon. This waste was enough to pack forty-nine 55gallon drums.
