Torch Run 2008 For the eighth consecutive year, the Department of Correction was represented by a large team in the Northern California Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run held Tuesday, June 3, 2008. Law enforcement agencies throughout the Bay Area and Northern California participated in the event, which raises funds and draws attention to the annual Northern California Special Olympics, held this year at UC Berkeley. The DOC team was led by Chief Edward Flores, who, along with San Jose Police Chief Rob Davis, made pre-run public remarks to a large gathering at Cesar Chavez Park in downtown San Jose. Chief Flores praised the Special Olympics organization for its work and commended the DOC runners, as well as runners from other law enforcement agencies, for their participation. "It's a great day for a run," the Chief said. DOC runners were joined on their leg by the San Jose California Highway Patrol. DOC donations from the torch run and shirt sales totaled $5,488 in 2008!
