IMPORTANT WHAT'S NEW

CHANGES IN SERVICES AND CONTACTS AT OUR OFFICE
Due to the retirement of several staff members, the Fire Marshal’s Office has changed a few things that we want to make you aware of.  Scheduling for inspections will be handled by our County Fire Headquarters staff, other duties formerly performed by our Administrative Assistant have been distributed among other clerical staff in the Department, and we have already started taking in all Fire Marshal submittals through the Building Inspection Office’s Permit Technicians.  These changes are listed in more detail below.

INSPECTION SCHEDULING:  Please call 408-378-4010 to schedule all inspections.  It is important to provide your plan check number and let them know that the inspection is for a County Fire Marshal permit, which will help speed the process along.  Our outgoing voicemail message will direct you to the correct person for all other issues.

PHONE ASSISTANCE:  Please call 1-408-299-5700 and the Planning and Development Department Clerical Staff will assist you with status requests, jurisdiction checks and forward you to a deputy for technical assistance.

OVERTIME REQUESTS:  Overtime requests should be sent to SDFM Tom Walsh Tom.Walsh@sccfd.org and copied to CFMO@sccfd.org or fax to: 408-378-9342  Please address your request to Chief Justice and include your plan check number and that this is a County project.

PLAN SUBMITTALS:  In October we changed our plan submittal process by having them submitted to the Building Inspection Office’s Permit Technicians.  Starting November 21, 2013, they will also be entering the submittal data into our database which might slow down the process a bit, but not significantly.  Plans will be accepted  between 8 am and 4 pm however we recommend you avoid the noon hour as staffing is light and you might experience longer wait times.

MINOR SYSTEM MODIFICATION PROGRAM (MSM):  We regret that we can no longer offer over-the-counter processing for small projects that qualify for our MSM program.  Instead we will be able to issue the permit within 3-5 days.  Plans should be submitted to the Building Inspection Office as would any other submittal, but the MSM form must accompany the application.  It is recommended that you inform the Permit Technician that this is a MSM submittal up front.  We will advise you when the permit is ready for pick up as we always have.  We apologize for any inconvenience this change in procedure causes, and greatly appreciate your patience.

REACTIVATION OR EXTENSION OF PERMITS: see webpage.

BURN PERMITS:  Starting January 1, 2014 burn permits will no longer be required for agricultural burns in the Wildland-Urban Interface.  You should still contact the Bay Area Air Quality Management District at http://www.baaqmd.gov/Live.aspx  the day of the scheduled burn to see if burning is allowed.  Please also notify your local responding fire department (San Jose Fire Department, CalFire, South Santa Clara County Fire District or County Fire Department the day of the burn.

ACCESS CONTROL STANDARD ELIMINATED:  For many years we have been enforcing our CFMO-C6 Standard;  Access Controlled Doors.  We have reviewed this standard and decided to eliminate the additional provisions that were added to the Building Code regulations.
