Program description: You will learn time saving tips, tricks, and techniques to write documents that are logically organized with clarity and impact. With the help of worksheets, templates and checklists you’ll discover how to write with more efficiency saving you valuable time. You will brush up on your proofreading skills to recognize and correct spelling, grammar and usage errors.

Learning objectives:

  • Learn to o​rganize content, shape your thoughts and create a logical flow.
  • Practice proofreading skills and eliminate unnecessary words.
  • Identify active and passive voice appropriately.
  • Understand requirements of various business documents including email correspondence versus email conversation, short and long proposals, and other types of communications.

Business Writing Essentials- Two half-day sessions.  Cut through writing obstacles, set and achieve writing goals, organize content logically, and choose the right format.

Editing and Proofreading- One half-day session.  Learn how to edit documents for clarity and impact and practice proofreading skills to correct spelling, grammar and usage errors.

Effective Business E-Mail Writing- One half-day session.  Write attention-grabbing subject lines so your e-mails get opened.  Plan and organize content so you get the results you want.

Writing Effective Business Documents- One full-day session.  This course helps you get the results you intend by correctly structuring written communication and using simple formatting techniques to easily get across the purpose and key information associated with the communication.

Business Grammar: Common Usage Errors- This course describes how to use commonly confused words correctly, including word pairs that sound alike and those that have related meanings.

Recommendation: We recommend you begin with Business Writing Essentials. All sessions of the Essentials course must be taken in the same quarter. You can take the other courses in any order.

Education Credits: Earn a certificate by completing the five required courses within a two-year time frame. Completion of this certificate is equal to ONE semester unit and can be applied to County jobs which have those requirements.
