County of Santa Clara to Host Seventh Annual Binational Health Week

Thousands in Santa Clara County to Benefit from Health Activities and Events Scheduled from October 1-17

WHAT:
Santa Clara County’s 7th Binational Health Week (BHW) Opening Ceremony launches an annual series of health education and health promotion events that include workshops, health fairs and screenings, and insurance referrals for underserved immigrants from Latin America in Santa Clara County.

WHY:
Binational Health Week is one of the largest mobilization efforts in the Americas to improve the health and well-being of underserved immigrants from Latin America living in the United States and Canada. Thousands participate and benefit from health activities conducted in Santa Clara County alone, thanks to the support of dozens of County agencies, private initiatives, community-based organizations, and hundreds of volunteers. This year, Santa Clara County’s Binational Health Week will focus on providing health resources and promoting awareness among the Latino community on the topics of healthcare access, chronic and communicable diseases, women’s health and mental health issues.

Gilroy middle and high school students will learn skills to help them prevent substance abuse and violence. Through interactive workshops, students will learn about nutrition and health, healthy relationships, how to avoid alcohol, tobacco and other drugs as well as gangs and violence. Event encourages local young leaders to develop goals and action plans around initiatives on their campuses or communities. Registration is mandatory.
