County of Santa Clara to Host Sixth Annual Binational Health Week

Thousands in Santa Clara County to Benefit From Health Activities and Events Scheduled From October 2-20

WHAT:
Santa Clara County’s 6th Binational Health Week (BHW) Opening Ceremony launches an annual series of health education and promotion events that include workshops, health fairs and screenings, and insurance referrals for underserved immigrants from Latin America in Santa Clara County.

WHY:
Binational Health Week is one of the largest mobilization efforts in the Americas to improve the health and well-being of underserved immigrants from Latin America living in the United States and Canada. Last year, over 13,000 people participated in health activities conducted in Santa Clara County alone, thanks to the support of 96 county agencies, private initiatives, community- based organizations, and over 600 volunteers.

South County Collaborative Community Health Day

Dozens of participating agencies will provide information and services, including health screenings, medical advice and health education at no cost to participants. Event includes cholesterol, diabetes and blood pressure checks, and HIV education and testing. Health day is combined with Celebración del Campo and a community job fair. Consulate General of Mexico staff will provide information on consulate related affairs.
Kaiser Permanente will sponsor a Teddy Bear Clinic to provide health messages and teddy bears for kids. Raffles and entertainment for the entire family.

Event encourages local young leaders to develop goals and action plans around initiatives on their campuses or communities. Event will address critical health related issues such as drug and alcohol abuse, and gang prevention, nutrition and health, teen pregnancy and social relationships.
