County to Unveil Anonymous Gun Buy Back Program for Voluntary Surrender of Firearms

County of Santa Clara Board President and top County law enforcement officials will announce the new Santa Clara County Anonymous Gun Buy Back Program.

WHY:              
Nationwide, there were approximately 31,000 deaths by firearms in 2011, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention National Vital Statistics Report.
 
The Santa Clara County Anonymous Gun Buy Back Program is one part of Board President Ken Yeager’s initiative to reduce the number of guns in the community, as outlined in his 2013 State of the County Address. The gun buyback program will allow individuals to voluntarily turn in their firearms, no questions asked, in exchange for cash.
 
Santa Clara County Sheriff Laurie Smith and Santa Clara County District Attorney Jeff Rosen are principal partners. Mayor Chuck Reed and Mayor’s Gang Prevention Task Force will help with outreach to the community.
