Media Briefing: Safe Reporting of Suicide

WHAT: 
Research indicates that the way suicide is reported in the media can contribute to additional suicides and suicide attempts. But stories about suicide can also inform readers and viewers about the why people commit suicide, its warning signs, trends in suicide rates, how to prevent suicide, and where services are available.

Reporters and Editors are invited to attend this briefing. This purpose of the briefing is to provide best practices on reporting suicides and other information that may be useful in future stories.

This briefing is part of community-wide efforts to reduce the number of deaths from suicide, particularly those that may be related to the phenomenon of “suicide contagion” and possible clusters of suicide.
