April is National Poetry Month. In celebration, this year, the Santa Clara County Poet Laureate teams up with Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA), the City of San Jose Office of Cultural Affairs, and Arts Council Silicon Valley to put poetry in VTA buses and light rail vehicles.
The poems are printed on car cards and available in every VTA bus and light rail car for the entire months of April and May. During their commutes, public transit riders can now enjoy the winning poems composed by Santa Clara County residents.

In December 2011, the Santa Clara County Poet Laureate Sally Ashton called for submission of poems of 50 words or less that relate to the theme of “invention” to capture the spirit of “making new” that shapes our county. Over 100 residents participated and five winners were selected and will have their poems displayed on transit car cards inside the vehicles.
