Santa Clara County Public Health Department Celebrates Breastfeeding Awareness Month 2010

Breastfeeding Policy Forum on August 25

Health facilities, such as hospitals, can play a vital role in helping new moms begin and establish their practice of breastfeeding. “Breastfeeding Just 10 Steps the Baby Friendly Way” is this year’s theme for breastfeeding awareness campaign.

The 10 Steps to Successful Breastfeeding provides support for women in achieving their breastfeeding goals, and guides the training of health care workers in offering breastfeeding support.

Since 1990, the rates of women who choose to breastfeed exclusively have risen significantly. However, only about 28% of labor & delivery units worldwide have fully implemented the 10 Steps to Successful Breastfeeding. Breastfeeding Awareness Month gives healthcare professionals an opportunity to review this approach and to revitalize activities within healthcare systems, among healthcare providers, and in communities to support women in achieving their individual breastfeeding goals.

The California Women, Infants & Children (WIC) Association and the Santa Clara County Public Health Department will hold a Breastfeeding Policy Forum on August 25, 2010 from 10:00 am to noon at Valley Specialty Center (VSC) in the basement auditorium. VSC is located on the campus of Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, 751 South Bascom Avenue, San Jose CA 95128. The Breastfeeding Policy Forum is free and open to the public.

The forum, “Breastfeeding Policy: Supporting Women & Families – Improving Health Equities,” will include the following speakers:

Steven Harris, MD, Chair of Pediatrics at Santa Clara County Valley Medical Center
Ann McDowell, representing Assembly Member William Monning
Cathy Boettcher, Chair, FIRST 5 Santa Clara Commission
Laurie True, Executive Director of California WIC Association
Bonnie Broderick, MPH, RD, Director, Chronic Disease & Injury Prevention Program,
Santa Clara County Public Health Department

The objectives of Breastfeeding Awareness Month are to:

    • Increase attention to the contribution of the Ten Steps Program to exclusive breastfeeding.

    • Revitalize the activities within healthcare systems and among healthcare providers and communities to support women
      to achieve their breastfeeding intentions.

    • Inform people everywhere that protection, promotion, and support of breastfeeding is a mother’s right, a child’s right,
      and a human right.

    • Enable women and all who care about human rights to fight for health care systems that support breastfeeding.

    • Ensure that healthcare workers who care for mothers and babies are adequately trained to counsel and support them in
      optimal infant feeding.

Members of the news media are welcome. Please contact Kathy Sweeney at 408.792.5052 if you are interested in attending or to schedule an interview a speaker.
