The Santa Clara Board of Supervisors and health care industry experts held an Economic Summit today at the County Government Center.
The health care summit is one session in a three-part Economic Summit that examines job growth potential, trends and challenges in the areas of green economy, health care and small business, as well as how the County of Santa Clara government can help improve economic activity that will lead to business growth and greater employment.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), approximately seven of the 20 fastest-growing occupations are in health care. The industry is expected to generate 3 million new jobs from 2006 through 2016 (a growth of 21.7%), the highest among all industry verticals.
The health care summit included a panel discussion with industry experts, the Board of Supervisors and County departments, facilitated by moderator Deputy County Executive Rene Santiago, to discuss job growth and creation in the health care sector. Industry experts, who represented hospitals and clinics, health care workers and consumers, shared their insights on the future for job growth in the health care sector in Santa Clara County.
Health Care Expert Panelists included: Amir Dan Rubin, Stanford Hospitals and Clinics; Bob Brownstein, Working Partnerships; Phil Forgione, Rural Metro; Chris Boyd, Kaiser Permanente Santa Clara Medical Center; and John Williams, North East Medical Services. The health care summit included special guest speaker Herb K. Schultz, Regional Director of the US Department of Health and Human Services, who discussed the impact of health care reform and national trends on jobs in the industry.
The final session of the three-part economic summit will be on Monday. Anyone interested in the future of job growth in Santa Clara County, including business owners, consumers, residents, and human resource professionals, should attend to add their voice as the County looks for ways to help shape a vibrant, resilient economy.

Over the past 17 years, according to the U.S. Small Business Administration, small businesses have generated 65 percent of net new jobs. At the third part of the Economic Summit, Small Business, small business owners and operators and community based organizations will share their insights on ways to grow small businesses and jobs in Santa Clara County.
