County of Santa Clara Seeks Nominations for 2010 Friend of the Veteran Award

Deadline April 1, Award to be Presented During Veterans Appreciation Month

SANTA CLARA COUNTY, CALIF.—The Santa Clara County Office of Veterans Services is seeking nominations for the 2010 Friend of the Veteran Award for residents who have demonstrated their commitment to veterans in Santa Clara County. Nominations are due by April 1, 2010 to the Office of Veterans Services. The award recipient will be recognized during Veterans Appreciation Month in May.

The Office of Veterans Services established the Friend of the Veteran Award in 1991 to recognize community members for their outstanding support and dedication to veterans of Santa Clara County. Walter Dillard, a Mountain View resident, received the award in 2008 for his commitment to veterans including helping patients at VA Palo Alto Hospital, participating in parades and ceremonies as a member of the honor guard, and leading Bingo nights for veterans. Margie Lowe, a 90-year-old volunteer at the Veterans Affairs Clinic in South San Jose, received the award in 2009 for spending thousands of hours helping the elderly and disabled veterans, including serving coffees and leading Tai Chi classes and field trips.

“Many members of our community volunteer tirelessly to support our local veterans,” said Ken Kershaw, Director of the County Office of Veterans Services. “The Friend of the Veteran Award was created to honor Santa Clara County residents for their dedication and service to local veterans.”

Nominees should have been residents of Santa Clara County for at least three years; have three years of active service to the local veterans’ community; and be at least 18 years of age or have demonstrated exceptional initiative.

Nominees should have participated or significantly contributed in the following areas: volunteering at the VA Health Care System and in community services, participation in patriotic holidays and/or special veterans’ and military events, volunteer service in family support activities for families with deployed military personnel and those in need, and participation in organized service groups consisting of veterans.
