In September 2009, the Board of Supervisors of Santa Clara County adopted a revised policy directed at ensuring that County facilities and buildings would be built or improved to be consistent with LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) as well as the GreenPoint Rated system used in the private sector.

“Green Building” is the practice of sitting, designing, constructing, operating, maintaining and demolishing buildings under methods that increase the efficient use of energy, water and materials while improving the impact of buildings on the environment and public health.

The Board recognizes that benefits from green buildings and building spaces include savings from reduced energy and water consumption, reduced costs related to sewage and solid waste, reduced absenteeism, increased employee retention, better health and wellbeing of occupants, and an overall decrease in environmental impacts.
