Announcing the 7th Annual Festival in the Park - Stayin' Alive!
Join us with the American Heart Association for a fun-filled health and recreation fair, one day only, Saturday, June 22, 2013 from 11 am - 4 pm at Hellyer County Park.
Admission is FREE!

Bring the whole family and learn hands-only CPR and take home a CPR Anytime Kit (while supplies last). Let more than 100 exhibitors inspire you to live a Heart Healthy life! Learn how to ride the Velodrome, we'll provide the bikes! And sign up for Healthy Trails 3, a FREE fitness challenge providing a fun and adventurous way to exercise, get fit and to connect with nature as you explore miles and miles of spectacular Santa Clara County park trails.

Lots of fun, including live entertainment, free kayaking and stand-up-paddle boarding on the lake, wall climbing, jump houses, a food court and lots of giveaways.

Friday, May 17
What Would Nature Do?, Calero, 11am-2pm
Use the wonderful outdoors as your classroom for the day. Enjoy a moderate 4-mile hike with a Ranger and peel back the layers of miracles that nature holds. Meet at the park office. Wear sturdy hiking shoes and layered clothing. Bring sun protection, water and lunch. (408) 268-3883

Saturday, May 18
About Boating Safely (ABS) Course, Anderson Lake, 8am-5pm
This beginner all-day boating class, taught by the Coast Guard Auxiliary, will give you the knowledge needed to obtain a boat license or safety certification in many states. Learn about boating law, safety equipment, navigation, and much more. Participants are encouraged to bring their vessels for a free safety inspection and certified safety decal. $35 registration fee covers course materials. Reservations required. (408) 592-9341

Introduction to Disc Golf: It’s Just a Walk in the Park! Hellyer/El Parque De La Raza De Paz, 9am–11am
Disc golf is a game where individuals throw flying discs at targets. Come learn about this fun, easy and inexpensive sport with members of the Silicon Valley Disc Golf Club. Ages 10 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Equipment is provided. Space is limited. Bring water, sunscreen and comfortable shoes. Register online or call (408) 355-2240.

History Tour by Van, Almaden Quicksilver, 9am-1:30pm
Step back in time and experience what life was like back in the mining heyday. Ride by van to various historic sites and enjoy a brown-bag lunch in the park. Tour costs $10 per person. Children must be over 6 years and 60 lbs. Meet at the Casa Grande/New Almaden Quicksilver Mining Museum. Bring a bag lunch, water, and sun protection. Reservations required. (408) 918-7773

Healthy Trails Bilingual (Spanish) Hike, Los Gatos Creek, 10am-12pm
Take an easy 2.6-mile walk with a bilingual guide along the Los Gatos Creek Trail. Meet at the parking lot by the fly casting pond with sturdy hiking shoes, sun protection, water, snacks, and a camera. Se habla espanol. (408) 355-2294

Living with Wildlife, Sanborn, 10am-12pm
Take an easy walk through the Redwoods and learn about living with wildlife such as mountain lions, bobcats and coyotes. Discover what “normal” animal behavior is, what wildlife needs to survive, and what to do if you have an encounter. Meet at the Ranger office with sturdy walking shoes, water and snacks. History Walk, Grant, 1:30pm-3:30pm
Join park staff on a leisurely walk to see historical features in the park. Learn about the history of Halls Valley from the Ohlone days to the more recent past. End your walk with a tour of the Grant Ranch House. Meet at the Ranch House. (408) 274-6121

Bike Safety for Young Riders, Hellyer, 8:30am-10am
Young riders will learn how to safely ride bikes on trails and roadways, then take an easy 4-mile ride along the Coyote Creek Trail with a Ranger. Meet at the parking lot on west side of Cottonwood Lake. Suitable for ages 9-12 with parent supervision. Reservations required. (408) 225-0225

Healthy Trails Hike, Almaden Quicksilver, 9am-1pm
Join a park interpreter on a 5.2-mile strenuous hike through diverse habitats. Enjoy spectacular views near the historic mining camps of New Almaden. Meet at the Hacienda park entrance with sturdy hiking shoes, sun protection, water, snacks, and a camera. (408) 918-7772

Wonders of Wildlife Riparian Walk, Anderson Lake/Coyote Creek Parkway, 10am-12pm
Take a short hike through a riparian area to identify animal signs, look for wildlife, and explore how we all fit into the ecosystem’s web of life. Meet at the visitor center at the end of Malaguerra Ave. Reservations required. (408) 918-7982

Hula Hoop Fitness Class, Vasona, 2pm-3pm
Hula hooping is no longer just child’s play; it has evolved into a fun form of fitness! Join us for a low impact yet energizing class using adult-size hoops. Learn the basics of moving the hoop around your torso as well as moving your feet, incorporating arms, and perhaps even some off-body moves! Hoops provided, no experience needed. Planting the Native Way, Almaden Quicksilver, 5:30pm-7:30pm
Enjoy a leisurely 2.5-mile hike with a Ranger to explore the benefits of native plants and how to add them into your home gardens. Meet at the Hacienda parking lot off of Almaden Rd. Wear layered clothing and sturdy hiking shoes. (408) 268-3883

A Taste of Kayaking, Vasona Lake, 9:00am & 10:45am
Park Docent Shirley Reekie will show and tell first-time kayakers all about this fun-loving sport. Choose from two sessions, 9-10:30am or 10:45am-12:15pm. Must be age12 or older and able to swim. All equipment will be provided. Register online or call (408) 355-2240. FULL

Tailgate Time!, Hellyer, 1pm-1:45pm
Be there when a Ranger rolls up to the playground to introduce you to some feathered, furry and scaled creatures that live nearby. Learn what you can do to protect your wild neighbors and their homes. (408) 225-0225

Wag N’ Trails Dog Hike, Mt. Madonna, 8pm-9pm
Bring your canine friend out for a 1-mile night time adventure through the redwood forest with a Ranger. Meet at the Redwood Grove picnic area. Bring doggie bags, a leash, insect repellent, sturdy hiking shoes and water. (408) 842-2341

Thursday, May 30
Healthy Trails Stroller Hike & Toddler Trek, Santa Teresa, 4:30pm-6pm
Join a docent from strollerhikes.com for a 1.8-mile outing along the Joice/Norred Trails. This trail has a short steep section (100 yards) to start that we can bypass for strollers (joggers recommended). The remainder of the hike is flat and sunny. Meet at the Bernal-Gulnac-Joice Ranch parking lot with comfortable walking shoes, snacks, water, and a camera. (408) 355-2240
