The Name Equality Act of 2007 gives specific rights to parties at the time they are applying for a California marriage license to choose and list on the marriage license the new name that each party will go by after marriage.
Applying for a Marriage License
To obtain a marriage license, both parties must appear together at the Clerk-Recorder's Office during Marriage License business hours.
Purchasing Confidential Marriage Certificates
Copies of a marriage certificate for a confidential marriage (as opposed to a public marriage) may be purchased ONLY by the parties to the marriage.
