Applying for Passports

You may apply for passports at the Office of the Clerk-Recorder during the hours of 8:00 AM - 3:00 PM.  (EXCEPTIONS - Due to unusually high demand &/or peak times, application acceptance hours may be shortened.  Please call ahead of your visit.) The Clerk-Recorder's Office will examine the application, verify the supporting documents, accept the payment and then send it to the U.S. Passport Agency for processing.  The U.S. Passport Agency will mail your passport directly to you.  The processing options available to you are as follows:

  • Routine Service:  4-6 weeks usual processing time
  • Expedited Service: 2-3 weeks usual processing time (Expedite Fee required)
  • In Person Service:  Less than 2-3 weeks lead time requires that you apply in person at the San Francisco Passport Agency (Expedite Fee required)

Note that the "hand carry" processing option is no longer available as of March 12, 2010.

Important: Be sure to bring a CHECK or MONEY ORDER as those are the only forms of payment accepted by the U.S. Department of State. 

You may inquire about the issuance of your passport by contacting the National Passport Information Center. Your options include:

  • Call Toll Free: 1-877-487-2778 from 7:00 am- 12:00 midnight, Eastern Time, Monday-Friday 
  • Go online:  www.travel.state.gov to do an Online Application Status Check or to email the National Passport Center

It usually takes 3 (Expedite) to 6 (Routine) business days after you apply for your application to appear as "received" for tracking purposes in the passport issuance system.
