For a first time in two decades, public health authorities are pleased to announce an absence of deaths from pertussis, or, whooping cough, in the state of California. This milestone is largely a result of increased awareness, rapid diagnosis and treatment through vaccination.**
California’s Department of Public Health (CDPH) reports that 9,000 Californians suffered from pertussis just two years ago! 10 of them died from the disease. Infants are most vulnerable to all serious complications. Pertussis is a serious bacterial infection accompanied by frequent coughing bursts that that make it hard to breath.
