Did you know that February marks American Heart Month? Efforts are being launched across the board to raise awareness and prompt change.
For instance, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) invites you to read the
Sodium Intake Report. You’ll learn which foods contain higher levels of sodium. Excessive sodium (salt) increases blood pressure, which in turn, can lead to hypertension, stroke and heart disease.
Ultimately, you want to limit your sodium intake to less than 2,300 milligrams per day if you’re under 51 years old. For those 51 and older – and African-Americans; and those with high blood pressure, diabetes, and chronic kidney disease - you’ll want to consume about 1,500 milligrams per day.
Studies indicate that 44% of the sodium we eat comes from only 10 types of foods. For other facts and tips on reducing your salt intake and encouraging a healthier lifestyle, check out this
Sodium Intake Fact Sheet.
