Motor vehicle crashes are the leading causes of teen injuries and deaths, and alcohol is one of the primary collision factors. In 2008, the
California Office of Traffic Safety reported 118 collisions in Santa Clara County involving drivers under the age of 21 who had been drinking. The crashes resulted in 111 injuries and three deaths. The goal of the
Alcohol and Impaired Driving Prevention Workgroup is to decrease the number of alcohol related crash injuries and fatalities among underage drivers. To address the underage drinking and driving issue in the county, the group offers two prevention services:
DUI Court in the Schools and teen drinking and driving panel presentations for parents and students.
To get involved in this group, or if your high school is interested in hosting a DUI trial or wants to schedule a panel
presentation for teens or parents, contact the Center for Chronic Disease and Injury Prevention, Traffic Safe
Communities Network at (408) 793-2700.
