In addition to bioterrorism, public health officials are preparing to deal with possible large disease outbreaks that can occur naturally but can become epidemics (large regional outbreaks of a disease) or pandemics (large global outbreaks of a disease).
The Public Health Department routinely monitors and conducts disease outbreak investigations. Health providers will probably notice an unusual disease pattern or a large number of people will go to emergency medical centers. Public Health officials will inform the public about disease outbreaks that are causing high levels of illness in the population, who is at risk and what to do through broadcast media and the web.
