On December 15, 1998 Laurie Smith became the twenty eighth person to hold the position of Sheriff in Santa Clara County. With Smith's landslide election victory on November 3, 1998, she became the first woman law enforcement officer to hold the Office of Sheriff in the State's History.
The forty seven year old Smith has been with the Sheriff's Office since 1973 and has been assigned to all of its major divisions. Sheriff Smith has held the rank of Assistant Sheriff for the last eight years. Smith has implemented many community oriented programs and has been at the forefront of the modernization of the Sheriff's Office.
Sheriff Smith graduated from San Jose State University with a Bachelors Degree in Administration of Justice and holds a Masters Degree in Management from Cal Poly Pomona. Smith is a graduate of the State's Command College and has also graduated from the FBI Academy.
Sheriff Smith is married to Brannan Smith, a retired San Jose Police Officer, and they have a sixteen year old daughter, Shannan, who is a student at Palo Alto High School.
