Mission Statement
of the Investigative Services Division
formerly the Detective Bureau:

The mission of the Sheriff's Office Investigative Services Division is to provide follow-up investigation of criminal activity, solve crimes, enable prosecution of criminals, recover property losses and restore justice in our communities in a professional, efficient and compassionate manner.

To accomplish this mission, Investigative Services consists of the following units, each dedicated to a particular type of crime.  These units come under one of two categories - crimes against persons and crimes against property.

CRIMES AGAINST PERSONS

Sex Crimes Unit

Investigates all sexual assault cases against juveniles and adults, child pornography, and internet cases involving the seduction of children.

Juvenile Unit

Investigates crimes involving juveniles as well as child abuse, neglect and all missing persons.  The unit also works very closely with the Juvenile Probation Department.

Robbery / Homicide Unit

The Homicide Detail investigates all murders, manslaughters (non traffic related), questionable deaths, mayhem, and kidnapping for ransom, as well as all violent criminal offenses committed within custodial facilities under the control of the Sheriff.

Domestic Violence Unit:

The Domestic Violence Unit investigates crimes involving domestic violence. The unit works very closely with victim advocate groups to ensure the safety and well being of victims of domestic violence.

CRIMES AGAINST PROPERTY

Auto Theft Unit:

The Auto Theft Unit investigates crimes involving the theft of automobiles and motorcycles. The unit works closely with the countywide Auto Theft Task Force.

Burglary/Fraud and Checks Unit:

Investigates major white collar crimes, including frauds, embezzlements, forgeries, computer crimes, as well as check and credit card offenses.  They also handle elder finance abuse, grand theft and annoying and obscene phone calls.

They investigate both commercial and residential burglary crimes. Responsible for coordinating with other agencies in apprehension of perpetrators who cross jurisdictional boundaries.

West Valley Investigation Unit:

Consists of two investigators and a sergeant, it provides investigative services for all North/West Santa Clara County unincorporated areas and the contract cities of Saratoga, Cupertino and Los Altos Hills. Detail investigators pursue to conclusion all cases generated from reports by Patrol Deputies except those cases dealing with homicide, sex, or narcotics.

South County Investigation Unit:

Consists of two investigators and a sergeant, it provides investigative services for all South Santa Clara County unincorporated areas. Detail investigators pursue to conclusion all cases generated from reports by Patrol Deputies except those cases dealing with homicide, sex, or narcotics.

SPECIAL INVESTIGATION

Jail Investigations Unit:

They investigate and prepare cases for prosecution which occur within county jail facilities.

Crime Scene Investigations Unit:

The Crime Scene Investigations Unit, an invaluable support function for the Robbery / Homicide Unit, is assigned to the collection, interpretation, preservation, and court presentation of physical evidence from crime scenes.

Property & Evidence Storage Unit:

Responsible for the safe keeping of recovered property and preservation of evidence destined for presentation during criminal prosecutions.

Notice of Sale of Various Surplus/Found or Seized Property

Notice is hereby given that the Office of the Sheriff of Santa Clara County will sell to the highest bidder various items of surplus/found or seized property.  Said sale will be conducted for the Office of the Sheriff of Santa Clara County by Property Bureau Incorporated on their websites www.propertyroom.com and www.stealitback.com beginning August 17, 2004 for a minimum of three days, 24 hours a day.

The Office of the Sheriff of Santa Clara County makes no guarantee or warranty, express or implied, of any nature as to the condition of the goods offered for sale.

County Counsel Investigations Unit:

Responsible for investigating incidents and accidents involving county property and or employees.

Court Liaison:

Processes all general felony, misdemeanor, infractions, and warrant field cite cases with the District Attorney''s Office and/or Superior Court.
