From September 2007 through June 2008, the Santa Clara County
Sheriff’s Office will participate in the Alcohol Beverage Control (ABC)
program called “Decoy Shoulder Tap”. Our primary focus is to bring the
public’s attention to the problem of minor alcohol consumption and send a
warning that selling alcohol to minors is illegal. Reducing the number
of licensees who sell alcohol to minors and reducing youth access to
alcohol is the goal of the program.
In addition to criminal
action against businesses, a licensee faces punitive action by ABC.
This could result in a fine, suspension, or revocation of the ABC
license, depending on the circumstances. The locations for enforcement
are selected at random except when a tip about a business selling to
minors may have prompted our focus, or the business has had a previous
violation. The enforcement can be expected throughout the county.
enforcement efforts were made possible by an ABC grant, which the
Sheriff’s Office has received for the second consecutive year. We’re
hopeful that the enforcement will reduce the number of minor / alcohol
related incidents for the year. Anyone wishing to give a tip concerning a
business furnishing alcohol to minor’s can call Detective Jaimez at
