On May 23 the Avoid the 13 DUI campaign honored 61 Santa Clara County Law Enforcement Officers at their annual awards ceremony. Five Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office Deputies were honored for their DUI arrests during the Winter 2005-2006 Avoid the 13 DUI campaign.
Deputies Rick Sung, Susan Helsley, Michael Jacobs and Ken Lopez made four DUI arrests each during the campaign. Deputy Julio Deleon had a total of five DUI arrests.
The 2005-2006 Winter Holiday campaign saw a decrease of 13% in DUI arrests compared to last year. Total arrests for this campaign numbered 568, compared to 645 last year.
County wide, alcohol related injury crashes rose to 23, up from 16 in 2004-2005. No one died at the hands of an impaired driver this year, compared to three deaths last year. Santa Clara County Law Enforcement departments conducted a total of 9 DUI checkpoints.
Avoid the 13 is the holiday law enforcement crackdown against drinking drivers in Santa Clara County. It is regarded as a pioneer and a national model for police campaign's against the drinking driver and has six spin-off campaigns. It has completed its 22nd year. The campaign runs from the weekend before Christmas to the day after New Year's Day, approximately two and a half weeks.
