On Saturday, 01/15/05, at 10:15 A.M., Santa Clara County Deputies were dispatched to Chitactac Adams Heritage County Park in Gilroy, to investigate a man who was armed with a handgun. Upon locating the suspect near Uvas Creek, Deputies asked the suspect to pull his hands out of his pockets. When he did so, he pulled out a .32 caliber Beretta pistol and put it to his head, threatening to kill himself.
The victim stated he was distraught over his bad marriage, poor health, and financial woes. He did not want to live anymore. He left a suicide note at his residence.
Deputies Gabe Sandoval and Dan Almquist used their communication skills to deescalate the situation, calm the victim, and convince him he had plenty to live for. After approximately twenty minutes, the victim complied with their requests, dropped his weapon and surrendered to the deputies.
The situation ended peacefully just prior to Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office Hostage Negotiators arriving on scene.
The victim was taken to Emergency Protective Services (EPS) and placed on a 72-hour mental evaluation hold for his safety.
