On June 13, 2005, the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office Cold Case Unit orchestrated the arrest of Kirk Bennett, 12/05/50, at his Middleton, Idaho residence, for the 1993 murder of Stephanie Jensen, 05/18/61. Bennett was extradited and booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail on July 8, 2005. INCIDENT: In June 1993, a suitcase was found by an Adopt a Highway crew just above the City of Saratoga, 120 feet down an embankment on Highway 9. The crew felt the suitcase was suspicious and contacted the Sheriff’s Office. When the suitcase was opened, deputies found a headless, handless corpse. The body was unidentified for 10 years. In 2003, Cold Case Sgt. Pedro Contreras re-opened the case and used good old fashion “gum shoe” tactics to solve this case. A review of Bay Area ‘Missing Persons’ cases led to victim Stephanie Jensen, age 31, who went missing out of San Francisco in June of 1993. Jensen’s friends and relatives in the Salt Lake City area confirmed that she had never been found, since they stopped hearing from her in May 1993. They were able to provide some physical characteristics of Jensen that matched that of the corpse found in the suitcase. Sgt. Contreras located Jensen’s half-brother and through DNA analysis, Sgt. Contreras positively identified the headless, handless corpse to be Stephanie Jensen. Bennett and Jensen lived together in San Francisco in 1993, via Utah, where they had met. Bennett was barred from practicing law and worked as a car salesman in San Francisco. Jensen worked as a youth counselor. Idaho State Police Investigator Kevin Butler and Salt Lake District Attorney’s Investigator Steve Bartlett assisted Sgt. Contreras in this investigation. Anyone with information regarding this case is asked to contact Sgt. Pete Contreras at (408) 808-4500.
