On 01-02-06 at approximately 12:20 AM, an elderly male experiencing chest pains was driving himself to the hospital. On his way to the hospital, he began feeling worse and remembered seeing several Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office signs pointing towards the South County Substation. The elderly male assumed someone would be at the substation and available to render him medical assistance. The elderly male arrived and realized the substation was closed and no other emergency personnel were in the immediate area to assist him.
Luckily for the male, Reserve Deputy Merino was at the substation completing paper work. Merino made contact with the elderly male. Determining the elderly male needed immediate medical assistance; Merino activated EMS and did everything within his means until medical personnel arrived on scene. It was later determined the elderly male was having a heart attack and quite possibly would have died on the door steps of the substation if deputy Merino had not taken immediate action.
The Reserve Deputy Sheriff is a non-paid community service position that performs an essential role within the Sheriff’s Office. Reserve Deputies work in all facets of the Sheriff’s Office, augmenting and supplementing the regular Deputy Sheriffs in a variety of assignments.
