On 07-05-07, an unidentified man walked into the path of an on-coming train traveling 60 mph. He suffered numerous injuries, some of which left his face in a condition making identification difficult. His fingerprints were run through every available system, but to no avail (it was later learned that he had lived in another country for the last 20 years, and had only recently moved to America).
Police sketch artist Deputy Janel Karrle was contacted and, after viewing the decedent, sketched a picture of the decedent's face in preparation for the generation of a Critical Reach System flier. Before that was completed Coroner Investigator Patra Albrecht, after viewing the sketch, searched through the stack of Critical Reach fliers kept in the Coroner Investigator's office. She found a flier produced by the Palo Alto Police Department detailing the events surrounding the disappearance of Jack Keown. A picture of Mr. Keown was included on that flier. The likeness of the photo to the sketch drawn by Janel jumped out at her!
Keys that had been found with the unidentified man fit Mr. Keown's van. Although DNA confirmation is pending, we believe at this point that our unidentified decedent is Mr. Keown.
